You'll be fine - healthcare here is good

Don't worry about getting sick in Istanbul. The private hospitals are modern, well-equipped, and many doctors speak English. Turkey is a global destination for medical tourism for a reason - the quality is high and the prices are low.

Public hospitals are cheap but crowded and mostly Turkish-speaking. Private hospitals cost more but are still affordable by Western standards, with English-speaking staff and modern facilities.

Insurance options

You need health insurance for a Turkish residence permit. Even on a tourist visa, insurance is strongly recommended.

Tip: SafetyWing works for the tourist visa period. For a residence permit, you need insurance that specifically covers Turkey - a local Turkish policy is cheapest and accepted by immigration.

Pharmacies (Eczane)

Pharmacies in Turkey are well-stocked and pharmacists are knowledgeable. Many medications that require a prescription elsewhere are available over the counter in Turkey.

  • Look for the green cross sign on the street
  • Every neighborhood has multiple pharmacies
  • 24-hour pharmacies (nobetci eczane): Every district has a rotating duty pharmacy open overnight. Ask any pharmacy or Google "nobetci eczane [your district]"
  • Common medications like painkillers, antibiotics, allergy meds, and cold medicine are cheap and easily available
  • Bring prescriptions for any controlled medications you take regularly

Tip: Pharmacists often speak basic English. Show them the generic name of your medication (not the brand name) for the best chance of finding it.

Tips

  1. Download the E-Nabiz app - Turkey's national health records system. If you see a doctor, your records are stored here.
  2. Private hospitals have apps - Acibadem and Memorial let you book appointments online.
  3. Ask the community for doctor recommendations. The Telegram group regularly shares recommendations for English-speaking doctors.
  4. Carry your insurance card and a copy of your passport when visiting a hospital.
  5. Tap water in Istanbul is treated but most people drink bottled or filtered water. Buy a filter pitcher for home.
