What does a month in Istanbul actually cost?

Istanbul is affordable compared to Western Europe, but it isn't cheap by Turkish standards. Prices have risen significantly due to inflation (around 30% annually). The good news: if you earn in USD, EUR, or GBP, your money goes a long way.

Quick answer: A single nomad spending carefully can live well on $540-$860/month. A comfortable lifestyle with a nice apartment and regular dining out runs $1,000-$1,400/month.

Three monthly budgets

Budget lifestyle (~$540/month)

You're sharing an apartment or renting a studio outside the center, cooking most meals at home, using public transport, and working from cafes.

How Istanbul compares

CityMonthly cost (single nomad)
Istanbul$540-$1,370
Lisbon$1,800-$2,500
Barcelona$2,000-$2,800
Berlin$1,800-$2,400

Istanbul sits in the affordable middle - cheaper than Western Europe, roughly on par with Southeast Asia if you adjust for quality of life.

Money tips

  1. Use Wise or Revolut for currency conversion. Turkish bank ATMs charge 3-5% fees. Wise gives you the real exchange rate.
  2. Pay in TL, not USD. If a shop offers to charge you in dollars, always decline and pay in Turkish lira. The shop's exchange rate is always worse.
  3. Negotiate rent. Unlike Western Europe, rent in Istanbul is negotiable. Offer 10-15% below the asking price, especially for longer stays.
  4. Shop at local markets (pazar). Every neighborhood has a weekly street market with fresh produce at half the supermarket price.
  5. Track the exchange rate. The TL fluctuates. A good rate month can save you hundreds of dollars.
  6. Keep cash for small shops. Most restaurants and stores accept cards, but small corner shops and street vendors prefer cash.
