The official Turkish immigration website tells you what documents you need. It doesn't tell you what the appointment is actually like, how long things take in practice, or what surprises to expect. This is the guide I wish I had.
My situation: EU passport, entering on a tourist e-visa, applying for a short-term residence permit (ikamet) from inside Turkey. I applied in Kadikoy.
| Step | When | Time taken |
|---|---|---|
| Applied online | Day 45 of tourist visa | 30 minutes |
| Got appointment date | 3 days later | - |
| Attended appointment | Day 55 | 2 hours |
| Day 82 (27 days after appointment) |
| - |
Total time from application to card in hand: 37 days.
The online form is straightforward but entirely in Turkish. Use Google Translate. Key fields:
Important: Apply at least 3 weeks before your tourist visa expires. Once your application is submitted, you're legally allowed to stay in Turkey while it's processed.
After submitting, you get an appointment date at your local immigration office. Mine was 10 days out.
This is what I actually brought (and what they checked):
Required:
They didn't ask for:
Tip: Get your health insurance from a local Turkish insurer (like Axa Sigorta or Acibadem Sigorta). They cost 200-500 TL/year and are instantly accepted. International policies like SafetyWing sometimes require extra verification.
The Kadikoy immigration office is on the Asian side, near the Kadikoy courthouse. I arrived 15 minutes early.
What happened:
The officer spoke basic English. He asked me two questions: "Where do you live?" and "How long do you want to stay?" That was it.
After the appointment, you get a temporary document (a paper printout) that proves your application is being processed. This is your legal right to stay.
The actual ikamet card arrived by PTT (Turkish post) to my registered address 27 days later. Some people get it in 2 weeks, others wait 2 months. You can track the status online.
| Item | Cost |

| Application fee | 1,200 TL (~$39) |
| Health insurance (1 year) | 350 TL (~$11) |
| Biometric photos | 30 TL (~$1) |
| Notarized lease copy | 150 TL (~$5) |

If you earn $3,000+/month and have a university degree, the digital nomad visa gives you 12 months directly and might be simpler than the ikamet process. I went with ikamet because I didn't meet the income threshold at the time.
